The Quran, as one would
expect, mentions the Ka’aba. It is very important to collect the opinion of the
Prophet about it. The order of appearance in the holy book of the suras follows.
Sura 2.125 speaks about its
origin. It says this: “And when we made the
House a place of return and shelter for the people. And make the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And we arranged an alliance between Abraham and Ishmael, who purified my House for those who make the turns, for those who came for retreat, to bow and prostrate.” (Spanish translation by J. Cortés) This sura connects the origin of the Ka’aba to Abraham. The turns are mentioned. J. Cortés gives us the measures while commenting this sura. The Ka’aba is a cubic building of grey stone, 10 x 12 metre and 15 metre wide. It is placed in the centre of the Great Mosque of Mecca, in the eastern-southeastern corner, and the 30 centimetre diameter black stone which the pilgrims touch and kiss is built-in one metre above floor-level. The place of Abraham is a little construction, 1.5 meter high with a 0.5 meter base, placed next to the Ka’aba entrance door. According to tradition, the footprints of Abraham are stamped there.

Sura 2.127 includes the same assertion: “And when
Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House.” Sura 3.96
states that “indeed, the first House established by mankind was that of Bakkah,
blessed House and a guidance for all”, and sura 3.97 says “it is the place of
Abraham”. Sura 5.2 mentions those who come to the Holy House (the Ka’aba), and
sura 5.95, the offering to the Ka’aba that has to be done by everyone who
deliberately kills an animal.
Sura 5.97 affirms that God has
made the Ka’aba, the Holy House, a station for mankind. In sura 22.26, God
remembers once again that He prepares the site of the House for Abraham.
Sura 22.29 alludes to the
turns around the Old House (the Ka’aba). Sura 29.67 certifies the Ka’aba as holy
and safe territory. Sura 106.3 mentions the Lord of this House (the Ka’aba).
The texts cited indicate the
exceptional importance of the Ka’aba in Muslim religion, something that is
confirmed by numerous representations. Sura 33.13 cites Medina with the
pre-Islamic name: Yétrib.
